St Mary’s Church Almondsbury – Church Roof and Fabric Appeal Since our Church was founded in the 12th Century, generations have been working hard to maintain the structure to the best possible condition. In the 1830’s the church was in very poor repair and significant structural changes were carried out.  The arcading and roof of the three aisles in the nave were replaced with lead and Welsh slate.  This served the building well for 150 years. In the 1970’s the lead guttering had reached the end of its life but due to financial constraints, it was replaced with asphalt. This asphalt has in turn run its course.  The Finance and Building Committee of the church believe that the asphalt should be replaced with a more durable material. The fundraising team is exploring a wide range of options with regard to raising the necessary money. These include direct approaches to various charities; an appeal to all businesses and traders in the area; as well as an appeal to all residents of the parish of Almondsbury. We passionately believe the church is the “village church” and is deserving of support from all who live and work in the area. During the course of 2008 there will be a wide range of local fundraising events.  These may include quiz nights, a bazaar, music recital; coffee mornings; village lunches; a Christmas card; a calendar designed by the children in the village school and various other activities.  This list is not exhaustive, it illustrates some of the ideas that we currently have. We are keen to encourage individuals to have an “event” of their own.  This would be at their own home, for example a Bridge evening; a Barbecue; wine and cheese party; an “open” garden etc.  The options are really endless. It would be organised privately with either a fee charged to participants or a donation sought.  All proceeds to go to the Church Roof and Fabric Fund. Would you be willing to host such an event? Our current Fund total is: £27,546 (updated on 07/10/08) This is a very encouraging increase of nearly £12,000 since the start of September 08.
