Bell Ringing at Almondsbury The bells below the famous ÔbentÕ spire have been sending
their music over our village for at least four hundred years. The tenor,
which weighs 23 cwt, bears an inscription that
includes the date 1605. The steps of the spiral staircase giving access to
the ringing chamber are well worn by the feet of the many ringers that have
climbed them through the ages. The current band, numbering about a dozen, varies in
age from mid-teens to over 80 years, and one family have been members for at
least three generations. The art of Ôchange ringingÕ, as well as serving the
church and its congregation, provides mental stimulation and a most enjoyable
form of physical exercise.
Bell ringers are a friendly, sociable group, and are warmly welcomed
into any tower in the land. Come along to the belfry, meet our captain and the
rest of our band, and begin a pastime that will challenge and entertain you,
whilst allowing you to serve your community (and save you the cost of gym
membership for as long as you are capable of climbing those well worn
stairs!) Whether young or mature,
you can be sure of a warm welcome and the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
