From the Going for Growth sermon series:
Reading the Bible regularly

Feeding from the Bible

ÔAll scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the people of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good workÕ.
(2 Tim 3:16)

If you believe the Bible is useful you will read it. The Bible is useful for two reasons:

1. What it is: God breathed. God teaches us through secular and Christian literature. The Bible has a unique role because it originated in GodÕs mind and expired from his mouth. But there was co-operation of human writers.

ÔNo prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from GodÕ. (2 Pet 1:21). Like Jesus Christ it is fully human and fully divine.

2. What it does: it informs our minds so we are equipped to serve God. It teaches doctrine, facts about God and the world:

   teaching – what is true
   rebuking – what is false
   correcting – what is wrong
training in righteousness – what is right

Notice that true knowledge leads to correct action.

So that the people of God – this is for everyone, including you
may be thoroughly equipped – perfectly adapted for a task

for every good work – everything God calls us to do.

Two practical hints

Keep it simple

Ask God to teach you one thing every time you read the Bible; do not get bogged down trying to understand everything

Read daily

Physically you do not rely on one Sunday lunch a week, so aim to read the Bible every day (without feeling a failure when you do not). Consider using Bible reading notes or making one of the websites on your bookmark a favourite.
